Plant some milkweed seeds and help save the Monarchs!

milkweed seed podMonarch larvae feed exclusively on milkweeds in the genus Asclepias and several other genera of viny milkweeds in North America. Milkweeds are perennial plants, meaning they live for more than one year and return year after year and continue growing until they reach maturity, which varies by plant. Habitat destruction is one of several reasons milkweeds have declined in the US which in turn has resulted in a severe reduction in Monarch populations.

You can help provide the habitat Monarchs need by growing milkweed on your property. We are are offering seeds from 3 species of native Maine milkweeds for a donation of $10 per packet (approximately 40 seeds). Learn more about each of these 3 species of milkweed below.

Donation for Milkweed seeds can be made online with a PayPal account or a credit card. You do not have to have a PayPal account.

The Butterfly Garden at the Charlotte Rhoades Park was established in 1998 to promote conservation education and gardening instruction in the community. Volunteers work throughout the season with school children and adults to learn more about butterfly habitat and observation.

All donations are greatly appreciated. Thank You!
